Can I play without downloading an app?
Yes. Open Ooh La Mahj in a browser on your phone, tablet, or computer—including an Android device. There is also a separate iPhone and iPad app on the App Store.
Do I need friends or an account to start?
No. You can start solo against three bots without creating an account. For a private table, share a link with your friends. Email sign-in is available when you want saved hands to follow you between devices.
Is Ooh La Mahj free?
Ooh La Mahj is currently free to play in your browser, and the iPhone and iPad app is currently free too.
Is this American Mah Jongg or tile matching?
It’s the American game, with jokers, the Charleston, calls, and a card of winning hands. It isn’t tile-matching solitaire, Hong Kong mahjong, or Japanese Riichi.
Can I play the 2026 hands?
Yes. Choose the 2026 hands or the original Ooh La card in the game’s card settings. At a private table, everyone plays the host’s selected card.
Ooh La Mahj is an independent app, not affiliated with or endorsed by the National Mah Jongg League.
What if I’m still learning the rules?
Start with the six introductory lessons, keep hints on while you practice, and use the visual help guide when you get stuck. You don’t need to master everything before your first hand.
